AI is less regulated than milk, says Microsoft president Brad Smith

Milk and washing machines are currently more regulated than AI, the president of Microsoft has said.

Brad Smith said there needed to be global safety rules in place, including a legal obligation to tell a "victim" if their system is breached by a rogue AI agent as well as deciding when outside evaluators should sign off on an AI product before it is released.

His comments put him at odds with President Donald Trump, who said the sector should regulate itself so US firms don't lose out to Chinese rivals.

But Smith said: "Right now, your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI. Every carton of milk that you see in the grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection."

Demands for laws and rules to control AI have grown after experts in the sector said they believed the technology is a threat to humanity. The bosses of the US-based AI giants such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind have all backed the idea of an AI development slowdown, but Trump has pushed against this.

Speaking to the BBC's Big Boss Interview podcast, Smith called AI both a "tool and a weapon" that urgently needed to be regulated. "Let's get started today," he said.

He said firms need "emergency brakes" – often known in the industry as 'kill switches' – to pause or slowdown AI if it got out of control in some way. He also said there should be a legal requirement for firms to write "incident reports" and tell victims if the technology goes rogue. He also suggested that independent government evaluators should vet new AI technology.

"We know how to do this for other products," Smith said. "We should build on that knowledge and think about how to apply it to AI." Smith said the UK was best placed to drive forward these global rules for AI because of its AI Security Institute , external

, launched during former prime minister Rishi Sunak's government as the AI Safety Institute.

"In the world of technology, in the tech sector, most people that I know would say, if you ask them, name the country that is the leader in having this technical capability, they would say, it's very simple. It's the United Kingdom. They are the best."

Zelensky says Russia hit Ukrainian power plant 'immediately after' Trump declared energy ceasefire

President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia hit a power plant in Ukraine "immediately after" Donald Trump announced what he called an energy ceasefire

  • "It's clear Putin doesn't read Truth Social," says Zelensky, referring to the US president's social media post on Sunday

  • Zelensky says Ukraine is willing to back an energy truce if Moscow does as well, adding that it could "become a major step toward ending the war"

  • So far, the Kremlin has not commented on the idea, which could see both sides pausing attacks on each other's energy facilities

  • Trump has been urging Ukraine to stop strikes on Russian oil infrastructure so Moscow can fulfil a recently struck deal to release diesel to the US and the global market

  • Russia has ramped up attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure every winter since Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion in 2022

  • Trump appears to have declared a deal prematurely, perhaps hoping to will it into existence,

Twelve killed in attack on airport in Saudi capital Riyadh

At least 12 people have been killed and 309 injured in an attack on an airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh, local authorities say.

The deaths included four Saudis, two people from Bangladesh and one person each from the US, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt, the Saudi civil aviation authority said. Operations at King Khalid International Airport have been suspended.

A Saudi-led military coalition later vowed to respond to the attack, which it blamed on the Houthis and called a "war crime". The Houthis said they were behind strikes on the airport on Thursday that killed three people and damaged a plane, but did not immediately take responsibility for the attacks on Saturday.

Fighting has recently escalated between Yemen's Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthis, who control most of the country. Saturday's attack was the deadliest in the kingdom since May 2015. As well as the strikes on Riyadh's airport, a projectile also fell near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam in eastern Saudi Arabia on Saturday, the Saudi-led coalition said.

The attacks come a day after authorities said three Saudis including a pilot were killed in two attacks on the airport by the Iran-backed Houthis the day prior. Another three people were killed in Houthi attacks on two Saudi airports on 6 and 7 October.

In Saturday's statement, the Saudi civil aviation authority said some of the injured were "in critical condition".It said damage to the airport was being assessed.

An eyewitness who said they had been in the domestic terminal told the news agency that they had seen gate 401 hit and "injured [people] in front of my eyes", adding: "Everyone was running." More than a dozen ambulances were seen rushing to the airport, according to news agency Reuters, citing an eyewitness.

Saudi-led coalition spokesman Maj Gen Turki al-Maliki later said the attack on one of the passenger terminals resulted in deaths and injuries among civilian passengers and airport staff.

He described the attack as a "full-fledged war crime". US Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly condemned recent attacks on Saudi Arabia as he confirmed an American citizen was killed in the strikes.

When later asked by reporters whether the US planned to join Saudi Arabia in carrying out strikes against the Houthis, President Donald Trump said: "We may. We're going to look at it. We just found out about the recent attack, so we'll make a decision. We move very quickly."

The UN special envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned that the latest attacks against Saudi Arabia "represent a grave escalation" and also "pose a serious threat to regional security". The attacks were also condemned by Egypt, Palestine and Qatar.

Russian glide bomb attack on Zaporizhzhia kills at least 20 people

Russia has attacked the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia with five glide bombs, killing at least 20 people including four children, local officials said.

The glide bombs hit residential buildings in the southern city on Saturday morning. At least 32 others were injured in the attack, with more still missing and believed to be under the rubble.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks on Zaporizhzhia were Russia expressing "its thanks" for a deal announced by US President Donald Trump last night easing sanctions on Moscow to import Russian diesel.

He added that 13 other regions had come under attack overnight, arguing this demonstrated Russia took "any easing of pressure to mean they can keep fighting".

Photos and videos from the site of one of the strikes in Zaporizhzhia show an apartment block mostly destroyed.

"The ground floor was hit, and the floors above just collapsed," acting Mayor Regina Harchenko told Ukrainian television from the scene.

She said more than 80 workers were involved in ongoing search and rescue operations which are expected to continue throughout the day.

The rescuers regularly stop to listen for any noises made by survivors who could be under the rubble.

Harchenko said Russia had struck at "our very heart" and "our littlest ones" were among those killed, adding that their deaths were "awful grief for their families. For the city."

Zaporizhzhia is a major regional centre with more than 700,000 residents. It is located less than 10 miles (16km) from the front line and is frequently attacked by Russian drones and missiles.
