Gunfight at the South China Sea Corral? As a kid I remember watching a few cowboy films like Gunfight at the OK Corral, High Noon, or various others I cannot remember the names of. But the plot was basically the same—bad guys, good guys, and a showdown. Well it looks like we are possibly headed for a showdown in the South China Sea. Here is what the USA is planning on doing. BREAKING: USS Ronald Reagan and Nimitz carriers sent to South China Sea for drills …Per Marketwatch the U.S. is sending two aircraft carriers into one of Asia’s hottest spots to deliver a pointed message to China that it doesn’t appreciate Beijing’s military ramp-up in the region. The USS Ronald Reagan and USS Nimitz are set to hold some of the U.S. Navy’s largest exercises in recent years in the South China Sea from Saturday—at the same time that China is holding drills in the area. With tensions rising between the two over trade, the coronavirus pandemic and China’s crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong, U.S. officials said they wanted to challenge what they called Beijing’s unlawful territorial claims. So the USA wants to challenge Beijing’s unlawful territorial claims. And here is what China has said before this latest move by the USA. South China Sea: Beijing warns of 'countermeasures' after US Navy deploys three aircraft carriers into Pacific Ocean …But in a follow-up piece published last night, Beijing took a more aggressive approach, warning that "countermeasures" in the region may be taken. "By massing these aircraft carriers, the US is attempting to demonstrate to the whole region and even the world that it remains the most powerful naval force, as they could enter the South China Sea and threaten Chinese troops on the Xisha and Nansha islands (Paracel and Spratly Islands) as well as vessels passing through nearby waters, so the US could carry out its hegemonic politics," the Global Times report quoted Li Jie, a Beijing-based naval expert, as saying. It also noted that Beijing could hold drills in response to show off its firepower. "China possesses aircraft carrier killer weapons like the DF-21D and DF-26 anti-ship ballistic missiles," the story said. It added: "Naval and aerial forces of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) have expelled many US warships that illegally entered China's territorial waters off the Xisha and Nansha islands in the South China Sea this year, according to PLA statements." So it looks like we are headed for a showdown in the South China Sea. The USA says it will challenge Beijing’s unlawful territorial claims, and Beijing says there may be countermeasures.  How this will turn out is yet to be seen, but it bears watching. Let me remind you that since the June 21 eclipse we are in a watch period for judgments to occur at esoteric time intervals past the eclipse date.
