Evangelical 'minister' Gloria Copeland who advised President Donald Trump's campaign sparked an uproar Tuesday by suggesting that Christian faith makes people immune from the flu.
"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." 2 Timothy 4:3,4 (KJV)
EDITOR'S NOTE: As I write this tonight, I am on Day 14 of dealing with a devastating bout with the flu. My fevers and chills have finally subsided, but I am left with a relentless, nagging cough and a much lowered level of energy. It was so bad that for the first time in nearly 9 years, I could not write daily articles for this site for almost a week. Gloria Copeland, con artist wife to Prosperity Gospel con artist Kenneth Copeland, says that "Christians don't get the flu" because "Jesus is our flu shot". The sad part is that millions of their deluded, Bible deficient followers will go around believing that mess and repeating it. Christians are never promised anywhere in the Bible that we will not get sick just like the unsaved, and indeed we die in equal numbers as the lost on a daily basis. Our home is in Heaven, not here. Our reward is at the moment of death or rapture, but in the meantime our physical bodies have no more special protection than anyone else has. The Prosperity Gospel is a lie from the pit of Hell, designed to appeal to people who reject Bible teaching in favor of false teaching that appeals to our innate sense of greed and laziness. And when the phony "faith healers" get sick, where do they go? To the doctor and the hospital just like everyone else. Shame on you, Gloria Copeland, you're a liar. Of course, you don't have to worry about getting the flu because you're holed up in your 24,000 square foot mansion and don't come in contact with the 'common people' whose money put you there.
Texas minister Gloria Copeland, who sat on the Trump campaign’s evangelical executive advisory board, denied the country is in the midst of a severe flu outbreak in a Facebook video that went viral because, "Jesus himself is our flu shot. He redeemed us from the curse of the flu.”
"We have a duck season, a deer season, but we don’t have a flu season and don’t receive it when someone threatens you with ‘everybody is getting the flu,'" Copeland added. "We’ve already had our shot: He bore our sicknesses and carried our diseases. That’s what we stand on. And by his stripes we are healed."
Public health experts immediately panned the remarks while some other members of the evangelical board distanced themselves from the comments.
“We don’t agree with that statement,” said Johnnie Moore, the unofficial spokesman for the panel during the campaign who frequently meets with White House officials on policy and engagement with the evangelical community. “I don’t know a single person in the White House who would agree with that.”
Word of Faith Huckster Gloria Copeland Claiming She Can Control The Weather:
Here we have Word of Faith televangelist Kenneth Copeland's wife, Gloria, claiming the ability to control the weather. These charlatans our inundating our airwaves with this nonsense. If Gloria actually has this ability then why won't she fly over in her private jet to some of the most afflicted areas of our planet and control the weather for them?
John Auerbach, president and CEO of
Trust for America’s Health and a former Centers for Disease Control associate director for policy, said people are best protected against the flu by getting a flu shot. “It would be harmful to suggest that there is a non-scientific approach to preventing influenza particularly during a year where we’re seeing serious illness and even an increase in flu related deaths.”
The White House declined to comment and referred flu-related questions to the CDC, which did not respond to requests for comment.
Copeland and her husband co-founded Kenneth Copeland Ministries in Fort Worth, Texas. Both were members of Trump's evangelical advisory board, which disbanded after Trump took office. Other members included former Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann and Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr.
This year's flu season is among the worst in recent history. The CDC last Friday said flu-related hospitalizations were the highest since the agency began tracking that statistic in 2010. Agency officials said the death toll among children has risen to 53 so far.
