Raising smiles for Syrian Christian children
New glasses for children affected by the Syrian civil war
"I cannot smile. I want to, but I don't seem to be able to do it. I miss my father so much."
Seven-year-old Alan lost his father a week ago. Hundreds of Syrian Christian children like Alan have seen their parents injured, kidnapped or killed. As Christians, they have experienced targeted violence from rebel groups such as Islamic State (IS). For some, the five-year brutal civil war has lasted more than half of their lives.

In the early morning of Tuesday 5 July, uniformed men armed with guns and machetes attacked three Christian communities near the town of Oicha in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They looted homes and stole livestock, killing five women and four men, including a church elder.

On Saturday (10 July), pastor's wife Eunice Elisha was brutally murdered as she shared the Gospel in her local neighbourhood in Abuja. Eunice's Bible was not taken by the attackers and was instead placed prominently by her body, which was discovered near a mosque close to the family's home.

17-year-old Christian woman in Pakistan raped during Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr
On Thursday 7 July in Farooqabad city, in Pakistan's Punjab province, a 17-year-old Christian woman was raped by a Muslim man. Sonia, whose parents were out working in the fields, was walking to the shops when Iqrar Hussain, personal body guard for local politician, Irfan Dogar, caught her and took her to his house. The incident took place on one of the three days of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim festival which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Pakistani Christian forced to flee after being accused of sending blasphemous messages via WhatsApp
A 26-year-old Christian from Gujrat in northern Pakistan has been forced to leave his home after it was claimed he sent "blasphemous" messages insulting Muhammed via WhatsApp. Defiling the name of Muhammad is a crime with a mandatory death sentence in Pakistan. Following the allegation, which was brought to the police by the mullah (local mosque leader), a Muslim mob gathered outside Nadeem James' home and threatened to attack his family unless the local police formally registered the case. The police complied and then arrested Nadeem's two sisters who at the time of writing remain in custody, along with Nadeem's 18-month-old nephew.

Senior Christian Leader wrongly accused of causing fatality after helping accident victim released after four days in prison
On Thursday 7 July, an African Christian who was arrested in Mozambique on a false charge of causing a fatal accident was released after four days in prison. He is a senior mission leader within the country, who was due at that time to be attending a continent-wide conference for church leaders which Barnabas Fund was running.
