Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, Who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn And to the quarry from which you were dug" Isaiah 51:1 (KJV)
Thoughts on Today’s Verse
There was no more blessed nation that the little nation of Israel, for God had chosen their forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to be the patriarchs of the nation.. to whom was given the holy Scriptures and through whom the Saviour of mankind was to be born.
It is hard to understand why a nation that was so blessed would turn aside from the God of their fathers and fall into such gross apostasy – and yet how reflective this is of the church today, for despite the incredible spiritual benefits and blessings that have been showered on the Body of Christ, so many are following after another gospel, rejecting the inerrant the Word of God and worshipping a Christ made in their own image.
In Israel however there remained a little remnant who did not follow after other gods, but who held fast to the Word of the Lord and they were being called to pursue after righteousness, for blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for God has promised that they shall be satisfied.
And in the same way there are those in the Body of Christ today, who are not enticed into the worldly ways of the apostate church but contend earnestly for the faith, fighting the good fight of faith; taking hold of the eternal life to which the Church is called, and conducting themselves in a manner that is worthy of the gospel of Christ. How important in this day.. when so many will not endure sound teaching and others are being carried about by every wind of doctrine, through the trickery of men and the deception of the devil, that we constantly nourished ourselves on the word of faith, through the Word of God – and the sound doctrine contained within its inspired pages.
The little faithful remnant of Israel were encourage to look back to Abraham and to Sarah, whom God chose to be the founders of the nation. They were the rock from which Israel was hewn. For Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Both Abraham and Sarah, though sexually dead and incapable of parenthood.. trusted God’s Word and became the pattern for Israel to follow – trusting God’s promise.. believing His Word and living by faith.
And the Church as members of Christ Body are His spiritual seed.. for He is the eternal Author and Finisher of our faith.. He is the incomparable Rock upon which we are to build and He is the Rock of ages from Whom we have been hewn – and having been saved by grace through faith in Him, we are also called to live by the faith of the Son of God Who loved us and gave His life for us. A faith that believes God – a faith that trusts His Word – a faith that walks in spirit and truth – a faith that in grace and humility whispers: not I but Christ.
My Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word of truth and the many lessons that we can learn from its inspire pages. I pray that I may grow in grace and in in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ – the Rock of my salvation, Who gave His life for me so that I can live for Him. I pray that I may not be influenced by the philosophies of this world and the apostasy that is creeping through much of the church today. Help me to look to Jesus and pursue after righteousness in His strength – and in Whose name I pray, AMEN
