PREMATURE BABIES EVACUATED FROM BESIEGED HOSPITAL IN GAZA HAVE ARRIVED SAFELY IN EGYPT

A group of 28 premature babies, evacuated from a besieged hospital in Gaza on Sunday, have crossed into Egypt

  1. It's thought they are travelling to an Egyptian airport, before being assessed and moved onto hospitals
  2. The babies were patients at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, now occupied by Israeli forces after heavy fighting.

  3. Earlier, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said an Israeli air strike on a different hospital killed at least 12 people
  4. Israel has not commented, but says it's attacking "terrorists" and "terrorist infrastructure" in the Gaza Strip
  5. Meanwhile, Qatar - which is trying to broker a deal - says only "very minor" obstacles remain to Israeli hostages being released.
  6. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says 13,000 people have been killed in the territory since Israel began its campaign against Hamas
  7. Israel began attacking Gaza after Hamas fighters crossed the border on 7 October, killing 1,200 Israelis and taking more than 200 hostage.
  8. Indonesia condemns Israel after alleged hospital air strike

    Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has condemned the alleged Israeli air strike on the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza.

This morning, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 12 people were killed at the site. Israeli tanks were later seen entering the area.

"The attack is a clear violation of international humanitarian laws," Marsudi said.

"All countries, especially those that have close relations with Israel, must use all their influence and capabilities to urge Israel to stop its atrocities."

The Indonesian hospital was set up in 2016 with funding from Indonesian organisations.

As a reminder, the Israeli military has not commented on the incident at the hospital - but says it's targeting "terrorists" and "terrorist infrastructure" in the Gaza Strip.

    Babies arriving in Egypt

I have been speaking to Dr Mohamed Salama who is head of the neo-natal unit at al-Ahli Emirates hospital, where the 31 premature babies were taken after being evacuated from al-Shifa.

“Some parents arrived yesterday at al-Ahli Emirates hospital to identify their babies," he says. “We asked them to sign a consent form so that their babies will be sent to receive treatment in Egypt.

"We have one baby who is unidentified and his parents are unknown. He is still here with us. The decision to keep him was taken by the Gaza health ministry as his condition is stable and does not need to be moved for treatment.

"Two babies, their parents refused to send them out due to personal circumstances."

Dr Salama says those three babies are in a stable condition.

  10. Wounded people are still inside al-Shifa hospital

While we have been bringing you the latest from the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza, a nearby hospital, al-Shifa, is still the focus of Israeli army raids.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says there are still 260 wounded people inside al-Shifa, and that one person is dying there every day.

The BBC can’t independently verify the claims.

Hundreds of Palestinians who had taken refuge at the hospital were evacuated on Saturday.

  11. Tanks seen near Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza

    Tanks near Indonesian hospital

As we've reporting, Israeli tanks are moving in on the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza, after apparent Israeli air strikes in the area.

The BBC has verified this image, taken from social media footage, showing Israeli tanks just north of the hospital today. There are about 700 people inside the hospital, including medical teams and wounded people, according to the health ministry of the Hamas-run Gaza.

The ministry says Israel is seeking to "put the Indonesian hospital completely out of service".

Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra says 12 people were killed by the alleged air strike. The Israeli military has not commented on the incident - but is continuing its operation in Gaza.
