THE CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE REPORTS THAT THE STREET PREACHER WHO WAS HELD IN 19 HOUR CUSTODY WINS POLICE COMPENSATION! PRAISE THE LORD!

Good news: Christian street preacher held in 19-hour custody wins police compensation

Dear supporter,
Police who wrongfully arrested Christian street preacher John Craven and detained him in custody for over 19 hours, have settled the claim for wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and breach of his human rights.
Mr Craven preached on John 3:16. He then stopped preaching when two homosexual teenagers asked him what he thought of gays. He replied by saying that what he thought didn’t matter – what mattered was what God thought. He then quoted from the Bible.
The youths responded by kissing in front of him and taunting him with crude and suggestive gestures.
The police then arrested Mr Craven and placed him in custody, denying him food, water and access to medication for his rheumatoid arthritis for almost 15 hours.
Through our Legal Defence Fund we were able to support Mr Craven’s claim and we are delighted that Mr Craven will now receive £13,000 in compensation plus legal costs from Greater Manchester Police.
Mr Craven has been street preaching and faithfully sharing God’s word for seven years.
It’s one of the worst cases we’ve seen and Manchester police’s behaviour was unlawful and totally out of line. People can disagree with the Bible and say they find it offensive but in 1999 a High Court Judge, Lord Justice Sedley, said that: “Freedom only to speak inoffensively is not worth having.”
When people ask questions, Christians should be able to answer by freely quoting from the Bible. No one should be placed in custody for 19 hours simply for expressing their beliefs.
The police settled a few days before the case was due to go to court and the total cost for Greater Manchester Police, including both parties’ legal bills, will be over £50,000.
The case has made a very big point and we hope it will make the police think twice before arresting a Christian for quoting from the Bible.
This was a Legal Defence Fund case and any support you can provide will help us defend Gospel freedom in the UK.
Yours in Christ,
