NAVALNY'S COFFIN ARRIVES AT MOSCOW CHURCH FOR BURIAL

Hundreds are gathering in Moscow for the funeral of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny shortly

  • There is a heavy police presence in the city, with masked guards stationed around a perimeter fence.

  • Mourners know they risk arrest by attending and showing support for a prominent government critic
  • A number of foreign dignitaries, including the US ambassador were seen near the church.

  • The Russian opposition leader died in an Arctic prison - where he had been held on politically motivated charges
  • Few details have been released on the cause of his death - officials say he collapsed after going for a walk
  • His wife alleges he was killed on the orders of President Vladimir Putin.
  • We're not afraid, crowds chant

As the hearse carrying Navalny's coffin arrived at the church, crowds outside could be heard clapping.

"You were not afraid, and we are not afraid," people chanted, as the coffin was seen being carried inside the church for the funeral service.Mourners gather in act of defiance and bravery

Hundreds and possibly thousands of people have turned up to say farewell to the late Russian opposition leader.

This is an act of bravery and defiance in itself, given that hundreds were detained earlier at spontaneous memorials which appeared across Russia shortly after Alexei Navalny’s death two weeks ago.

Mourners in Moscow are aware of the possibility of being arrested and are apparently not carrying any political slogans.

There have been no reports of arrests so far.

Foreign diplomats, including the German, French and US ambassadors, have arrived at the church to pay their respects to Alexei Navalny.

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, Pierre Levy and Lynne Tracy have been pictured near the church, dressed in black and carrying red roses.

  • Israel-Gaza war: UN chief urges probe into deadly aid convoy incident

The head of the UN has called for an independent investigation into the deaths of more than 100 Palestinians during an aid delivery in Gaza.

At least 117 people were killed and more than760 injured on Thursday as they crowded around aid lorries.

UN Secretary General António Guterres condemned the incident and said "desperate civilians" need urgent help.

Hamas accused Israel of firing at civilians, but Israel said most died in a crush after it fired warning shots.

On Thursday international criticism of Israel mounted with French President Emmanuel Macron saying civilians had been "targeted by Israeli soldiers".

The EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borell, described the incident as "totally unacceptable carnage".

Reacting to the incident, Mr Guterres wrote on social media: "I condemn Thursday's incident in Gaza in which more than 100 people were reportedly killed or injured while seeking life-saving aid."

"The desperate civilians in Gaza need urgent help, including those in the north where the UN has not been able to deliver aid in more than a week."

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry called the incident a "massacre".

The UN Security Council scheduled a closed-door emergency meeting to discuss the incident, during which Algeria - the Arab representative of the body - put forward a draft statement blaming Israeli forces for "opening fire".

While 14 of the Council's 15 members supported the motion, the US blocked it, according to AP news agency, citing the Palestinian UN ambassador Riyad Mansour who spoke to reporters afterwards. US envoy Robert Wood said the facts of the incident remained unclear.

Thursday's incident took place shortly after 04:45 (02:45 GMT) at the Nabulsi roundabout, on the south-western edge of Gaza City.

A convoy of 30 lorries carrying Egyptian aid was making its way north along what the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described as a "humanitarian corridor" which it said its forces were securing.

IDF's chief spokesman, Rear Adm Daniel Hagari said civilians surrounded the convoy and people began climbing on the lorries.

"Some began violently pushing and even trampling other Gazans to death, looting the humanitarian supplies," he said. "The unfortunate incident resulted in dozens of Gazans killed and injured."

Putin plans to stoke conflict in Africa with private militias, 'weaponising' the flow of migrants to try and influence European elections

Putin plans to stoke conflict in Africa with private militias, 'weaponising' the flow of migrants to try and influence European elections

    • Russia already wields influence over the main routes used by migrants
    • Now, it has been warned that - using paramilitary forces such as Wagner -  Putin will stoke unrest in already volatile African countries, driving refugees north.

    • Russia is trying to destabilise Europe and influence its elections by driving migrants into the continent using private armies, it has been claimed.

Vladimir Putin already wields influence over a number of the main routes used to reach the continent, and it is now feared that Russia will 'intensify' its efforts to move migrants towards Europe with the arrival of spring.

Using paramilitary forces and private mercenaries, including the notorious Wagner group, it is believed Russia will stoke violence in already volatile nations such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Sudan, Central African Republic and Libya - forcing people to flee their homes and thus driving refugees towards Europe.

    • The Kremlin has already been accused of trying to create a refugee crisis by sending asylum seekers to its border with Finland, forcing the new NATO member to close its doors to migrants in a bid to stem the tide.

And since 2021, Belarus - Russia's closest ally - has been accused of funnelling immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa - who have travelled up through Russia - to its borders with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
