In my role as a teacher, I get asked a lot of questions, and here's one of them. While it's asked various ways, it's basically this: "Why should we study The Great Tribulation if we as Christians won't experience it?" I'll share some thoughts I have in response to it. 

 

I believe several problems arise if we assign value to the study of certain doctrines or portions of Scripture, based on whether we believe we will or will not experience the circumstances of the specific text. 

 

Let's start high-altitude here.  

 

First, this sort of rationale runs the risk of regarding much of the Word of God as irrelevant. If one believes in the pre-Trib Rapture as those who ask this question typically do, then any element of Scripture which finds fulfillment after the Rapture could be conveniently set aside. 

 

"We'll be with Jesus! Everything will be great for us then, so what does it matter what comes next, right?" I've heard people talk this way on a few occasions.

There are many people and groups claiming to be genuine, unique, and real these days. The mantra heard everywhere now is be: Authentic. Many groups claim to be the purveyors ultimate truth. While authenticity and truthfulness are paramount in the realm of personal qualities, these noble attributes can be fabricated and fashioned in order to deceive others. 

 

Anytime the truth is twisted, it is wrong. When truth is twisted using religion, it becomes especially disturbing. Nowhere is it more disturbing and eternally destructive then when individuals or groups masquerade as true Christians and claim that their church is the true way to God.

 

It shouldn't be surprising that false Christian cults are so pervasive in these last days. Jesus told us that, "Many will come in My name."

 

Mark 13:3-6 "And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?" And Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray."

 

The absolutes and truth from God's written word are more assured then the very ground we stand on. We can place our hopes for the present time and for eternity in the Lord. We know this because He has much to tell us about His unchanging nature.

In my last message we dealt with how Paul, who was transformed from Saul the persecutor of those who followed Jesus Christ, in the Way, into Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles after being met on the road to Damascus by the risen Lord Jesus.

 We touched briefly on "mysteries" (secrets) that were revealed to Paul alone and that make up a vast portion of the New Testament that touch the Church body of Paul's time, and ours today. Some make the statement in my last message that Abraham was the beginning of faith in God. True, Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness, but Paul showed that since Jesus death and resurrection, grace alone through faith is what is required for salvation. Let us recap what we have learned and take a moment and review each found on my website as we go further into the "secrets" that Paul learned from the risen Lord Jesus:

Much has been said and written about that statement of Jesus, as to its implications and applications. It is the thought behind the parables of Jesus, teaching His disciples, and those following, the importance of faithfulness in our given stewardship responsibilities. Likewise, if we do not know the day or the hour, then knowing the specific year, month or week is not likely, either.

 

So we understand the importance of the next enlightenment Jesus opens up to us in regard to that day and hour-"when you see these things begin to happen...." Paying attention to the "signs of the times" is the way to "watch, for you do not know at what hour your Lord may come."

 

A somewhat related event that sometimes gets tangled up with the "no one knows the day nor the hour" is the incident involving that last question the disciples had for Jesus just as He was beginning to ascend into the heavens in a cloud, as recorded in Acts 1:6-7:

 

"Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, 'Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?' And He said to them,   'It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.'"

 

In other words, the Father has an appointed time for that to be fulfilled. Obviously, then, He had set an appointed time, and He did it, on May 14, 1948. So that incident had nothing to do, directly, with the coming of the Son of Man. It was, in fact, though, the door-opening event to begin the last of the latter days of this age.

It is in the image of Adam and Eve after they fell. "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." Psalm 138:2 (KJV) How seriously does God take His own word? Well, for starters, He says in Psalm 138 that He has placed His word above that of even His own Name. In Matthew 4:4, He says that we are to live by 'every word' that proceeds out of His mouth. So what are the chances that the Bible is a book that is 'evolving to suit our lifestyle choices"? Right around absolute zero I would say. Maybe less. Listen as a gay pastor attempts to make the case that God's Holy word is fluid, evolving and adapts to whatever our lifestyle choices are. One of the arguments of the gay 'christian' community is that God created all of us, gay and straight, in His image. But does the Bible say that all people are created in His image? No, it does not. The Bible says that Adam was created in His image, and Eve was created from that same image from Adam. Then sin entered the Garden and they fell and became cursed. 2 chapters later we read exactly whose image we have been created in. "And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:" Genesis 5:3 (KJV) You and I, when we were conceived, were created in the fallen image of sinful Adam, outside of the Garden of Eden. Our natural birth, our first birth, is not in the image of God. It is in the image of Adam and Eve after they fell. This is why Jesus says in the book of John that we must be 'born again' if we want to enter into Heaven. We need a new birth, a second birth, in order to be in the image of God. "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3 (KJV) What is being born again? It is the action of the Holy Spirit when you by faith receive the payment for sin that Jesus made on Calvary as your payment for your sins. It is not a quickie 30 second prayer, it is not about your feelings, hopes, wishes or dreams. It is a legally binding transaction, based solely on the word of God, where you exchange your sins for Jesus righteousness. But if you do not come to Him as a sinner seeking payment for your sins, then you have not come to Him in a way that will save you. When Jesus went to the cross, He went there for one reason and one reason only. To make a payment. For your sins. Sins like homosexuality, lust, greed, drunkenness, fornication, envy, strife, lying, cheating, stealing and the list goes on. He paid for every sin you ever committed or ever will commit. Jesus paid it all. But that's not all. At the moment you come to Him by faith and He saves you by His shed blood, the Holy Spirit then SEALS YOU IN so you can never 'lose it'. "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye alsotrusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory." Ephesians 12-14 (KJV) Make no mistake, homosexuality is a sin. If you are a gay 'christian' who thinks that the same God who allowed His own Son to be killed for sin on the cross is going to bend His word to accommodate your lifestyle choices, you are fatally wrong and eternally mistaken. There is no such thing as a born again gay Christian or a gay pastor, it doesn't exist. Because if you are LGBT and you actually get saved, the first thing the Holy Spirit will do is convict  you of your lifestyle choices, and empower you to fight against them. "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet." Romans 1:26,27 (KJV) If you are a 'gay christian' and have no conviction that homosexuality is a sin, then you are likely unsaved and headed for a Devil's Hell. The Bible promises that God will save all that come to Him, even the vilest of sinners, through His Son Jesus Christ. That includes every member of the LGBT community. But when He saves you, one evidence of that will be that He has changed  you. You can come as you are, but He will not leave you as He found you. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
