Eleven killed in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, authorities say
Eleven people have been killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, authorities say, in one of the deadliest days of attacks since an agreement aimed at reducing hostilities was announced in June.
Lebanon's prime minister said seven people were killed in a strike on a house on the outskirts of Ansar, 70km (43 miles) south of the capital, Beirut. State media reported three children and two women were among the dead.
Israel's Defense Forces (IDF) said it had killed a commander of Hezbollah - the Iran-backed Shia militia - following an attack against Israeli soldiers.
The commander's family "who he used as human shields" were present and "harmed", it added.
Later on Saturday, another round of strikes hit the town of Deir al-Zahrani, killing four and wounding five others, the Lebanese ministry of health said.
Lebanese authorities say the strike in Ansar at around 04:30 (01:30 GMT) occurred where displaced families were living. Footage on social media shows large plumes of smoke permeating through the streets of the village as sirens ring out.
Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the attacks, saying the seven civilians killed were not "military infrastructure".
"Israel must halt this escalation," he said. "For the security of our people and their right to life on their land are not subject to negotiation or bargaining."
The IDF said the incident that prompted its strike on Ansar had taken place in the Ali al-Taher Ridge, a strategic high ground overlooking much of south-eastern Lebanon and one of the war's most fiercely contested positions.

Qatar denies capturing three Iranian pilots after downing fighter jets
Iran has called for the release of three Iranian pilots it said were captured by Qatar after two fighter jets were hit by air defences during a military operation at the start of the US-Iran war.
In a letter to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Iran's Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh said the pilots - Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian - had been held captive for six months.
He said the body of a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, was returned after he was killed in the same operation on 2 March 2026 - the third day of the war.
Qatar "categorically denied" Iran's claims and said it was "surprised by these misleading statements".
Gen Bagherzadeh said the three pilots had been captured by Qatar after they ejected from their jets during the combat mission on a Qatari military base.
In the letter to ICRC chief Mirjana Spoljaric, published by Iranian media, he accused Qatar of violating "the inalienable rights of these prisoners, contrary to all international laws and regulations".
The letter also claimed the three pilots had not been allowed to meet or contact their families.

Britain's Iran policy slammed as 'dangerously complacent' as Tehran targets Jews on UK streets

Britain's Iran policy has been slammed as complacent and lacking long-term thinking in a new report. A leading expert on Iran has warned that ongoing Iran conflict has exposed flaws in the UK's approach to Iran as Tehran directly targets Jewish and Israeli people in the UK.
The paper, written by Professor Ali Ansari, a leading authority on Iran, for Policy Exchange, features a foreword from Tory MP Tom Tugendhat, who pointed to years of British failure of "strategic thought".
Tom Tugendhat told GB News: "GB News has long raised the profound threat presented by the Islamic Republic of Iran - and rightly so. The ruling theocratic regime has plotted to kidnap and murder dissidents on British streets, while deploying criminal groups to terrorise Jewish communities through arson attacks and vandalism.
"Abroad, it arms Russia's invasion of Ukraine, bankrolls terrorist proxies across the Middle East and threatens the shipping and energy routes our economy depends on - all while racing toward nuclear weapons."
The Iran war broke out after the White House's negotiations with Tehran fell through - but Prof Ansari has argued the focus on the nuclear programme has obscured the wider challenge posed by Iran, including proxy networks and attacks inside the UK.
Mr Tugendhat added: "It is clear that Tehran is pursuing a sustained campaign of aggression against the British homeland and our interests in the Middle East to intimidate our people, fracture our alliances and force Britain into retreat.

Five years after the Taliban swept to power, does the West have any influence?
In a whitewashed basement in a village south of Kabul, a dozen young women bustle about, stirring cauldrons of bubbling cherries and plums, and sticking labels on glass jam jars. Ventures like this are one of the rare spaces where women are still able to gain skills and employment in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
It is run by Najia, a 47-year-old Afghan entrepreneur and mother of nine children who was married at the age of 14.
If the authorities hadn't barred girls and young women from secondary schools and universities, many of the women in this workshop, including Naija's daughters, would be studying for a different kind of future.
But now, even this is being squeezed too. Recent rules say women have to ask men to take their products to market, and only men can sit at their stalls to show their wares at trade fairs. The Taliban gives various reasons for this, including claiming that women aren't wearing proper hijab or head covering.
"The world has to talk to the Taliban in a different way because it's just not working," says Najia. "The lives of Afghan women have to change because we're losing hope."
Five years after this ultra-conservative Islamist movement took charge, women are banned from much of the public sphere and girls are prohibited from going to school over the age of 12. Many inside and outside Afghanistan are asking the same pressing question: what's the best way to engage the Taliban to try to achieve meaningful change?
The issue is deeply divisive. There are fissures between many groups, with a huge array of conflicting issues at stake. These include women's rights, unpredictable Taliban edicts, international sanctions and aid cuts during a spiralling humanitarian crisis. The international response is split between Western countries often focused on human rights and others more interested in investment opportunities. And the West itself is divided on the best response. Many now accept that whatever they're doing, it's not working.

US aircraft carrier on way to relieve USS Lincoln after issues reported on board
A US aircraft carrier is headed to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, on which thousands of sailors have reportedly faced food shortages and difficult conditions on an extended, nine-month deployment.
The USS George Washington, which was near Malaysia on Thursday, could arrive in the region in about nine days, BBC analysis shows.
Family members of sailors onboard the Lincoln have expressed concern about their mental health deteriorating due to the conditions, with some sailors having reportedly attempted to jump overboard.
While the US Navy has acknowledged supply challenges, it has denied that a mental health crisis is taking place on the Lincoln, which has 5,000 onboard.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, President Donald Trump denied that family members were concerned about the welfare of their relatives and dismissed the possibility that the deployment had been too long.
"Not nearly long enough," he said. Trump also confirmed that another ship will replace the Lincoln, although he did not identify it by name.
Citing a US official, CBS News - the BBC's US partner - reported that the George Washington left a naval facility in Yokosuka, Japan in May to patrol the Pacific region and is now headed to replace the Lincoln.
Tracking data compiled by BBC Verify shows that at its last recorded speed, the vessel would reach Duqm port in Oman, about 500 miles off the coast of Iran, around 22 August.
Once it arrives in the Middle East, it will be the third aircraft carrier in the area. The USS George HW Bush is also there. No US aircraft carrier will remain in the Pacific.
The Lincoln has been at sea since 11 December on a deployment that was initially slated to end in May, tracking data compiled by BBC Verify shows.

Activists try to deliver aid to Palestinians in homes besieged by Israeli settlers
Activists have tried to deliver supplies to Palestinians whose homes in the occupied West Bank have been besieged for days by Israeli settlers.
The group left water and food near one of the houses in Qusra where two Palestinian families have been trapped since Sunday, with their power and water supplies cut off.
Two of the residents said Israeli forces had prevented the activists from delivering the aid directly to them, and the supplies had to be left outside. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied this.
Also on Friday, a number of settlers returned to set up a tent near the site - a day after an operation to disperse them from the area. It was later removed by Israeli forces.
The IDF said Qusra was a "closed military zone" and so Israeli civilians - who were among the activists - could not enter the area.
"But they weren't prevented from transferring aid to the Palestinian homes in Qusra."
It said in a further statement that Israeli civilians had erected a tent in the Qusra area earlier on Friday, "and IDF soldiers operated to remove it while protecting the local residents".
About a dozen Palestinian households were told to leave their properties during the operation to disperse settlers on Thursday, including members of the Abu Ridi and Hassan families living in two of their three besieged homes.
Qusra Mayor Abdul Azim Wadi told the BBC that Israeli forces were using some of the vacated Palestinian houses as barracks.
